Government Rental Units
Overview
The Rental Programme offers temporary housing assistance to Bahamian citizens who face economic challenges and are unable to manage a mortgage at the present time. Government rental units are also in place to assist Bahamian citizens in their path to home ownership via the government rent-to-own programme.
Turn-around time: varies, as rental units are assigned based on availability. There is no deadline associated with this service.
Fees: there are no fees associated with this service. However, the first month's rent is required at contract signing.
Where to apply: this service is offered in New Providence only. Applications are submitted in person to the Ministry of Housing and Land Reform – Department of Housing, 3rd Floor, Edwin “Smiley” Bastian Building, Thompson Boulevard, PO Box N275, Nassau, New Providence, The Bahamas. Manager of Government Rentals Unit (Administration): Mr. Rayford Rigby. Tel: (242) 302-5800. Opening hours 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, except public holidays.
Who can apply
- Bahamian citizens and residents who are 18 years of age or older
- Applicants facing economic challenges who are unable to manage a mortgage at this time
- Applicants interested in the government rent-to-own pathway to homeownership
Required documents
- Proof of Bahamian Status (Passport) / Certificate of Identity
- Current National Insurance card
- Verification of income, not more than three months old
- Recent pay slip
- Job letter
- Social Service recommendation
Application steps
- 1Submit the application in person
Complete the application form and submit it in person at the New Providence office — Ministry of Housing and Land Reform, Department of Housing, Edwin “Smiley” Bastian Building, PO Box N275, Nassau. Manager of Government Rentals Unit (Administration): Mr. Rayford Rigby. Tel: (242) 302-5800. Forms are completed by the applicant during the interview.
- 2Requirements reviewed
Once all requirements are satisfied, and based on availability of units, the applications are processed.
- 3Unit assigned, first month’s rent and contract
Once a unit is available an applicant is assigned thereafter. The applicant’s first month’s rent must be paid prior to occupancy. Once this is paid and the contract is signed, the keys are turned over to the applicant.
- 4Upkeep and utilities
Once keys are turned over, the tenant is responsible for the upkeep of the interior of the apartment and all utilities.
- 5Monthly rent
The monthly rental charge is due and payable at the beginning of each month thereafter. Failure to pay may result in eviction.
